By Sleepy Owl Coffee

There are different types of coffee beans available in the market today and each of these coffee beans are used to make different types of coffee and bring with them their own flavour, quality, texture, aroma, characteristics and even usage. Today we’re going to talk about two of the most popular coffee beans that are widely used - arabica beans and robusta beans.

We bring to you a wide range of coffees consisting of both arabica beans and robusta beans, but we will get to that later.

When it comes to different types of coffee beans (there actually are more than 100 of them), they are largely divided into two types, namely, arabica beans and robusta beans which are essentially different species of the same coffee plant. Robusta beans are also known as canephora. Approximately 75% of the world produces arabica coffee beans and about 25% of the world produces robusta beans.

There are a few but significant differences between these two types of coffee beans that you must know. Knowing the type of coffee beans that you are consuming is very important and helps you to make better decisions when it comes to buying coffee to make at home.

Let’s talk about some of the differences between these two popular coffee beans.

Starting with what you see first, their shape, in which you’ll notice that arabica coffee beans are more oval whereas robusta beans are more circular in shape.

Next we come to a huge differentiating factor, which is their taste. Robusta beans have a more earthy, burnt, rubbery and bitter taste than arabica beans. Arabica coffee beans, on the other hand, tend to be much more smooth, sweet and chocolatey than robusta beans, which is one of the reasons why it is a more popular and preferred choice for many coffee drinkers.

A huge reason behind this taste difference is that robusta beans have more caffeine than arabica coffee beans. It actually has almost double the amount of caffeine than arabica coffee beans. While the idea of drinking strong coffee with more caffeine sounds tempting, it might not taste as good because the caffeine makes it taste bitter.

Arabica coffee beans have almost twice the amount of sugar concentrate in them than robusta beans. They also have nearly 60% more lipids than robusta beans. Arabica coffee beans are known to be more acidic than robusta beans in this regard. This is another reason why arabica beans are a popular choice for coffee lovers.

Arabica beans are also higher in quality than robusta beans, however that doesn’t mean that robusta beans don’t taste good. Due to their low quality they are also often used as fillers or in coffee blends instead of being used whole to make coffee. But when it comes to arabica beans, their quality is so high that you’ll find coffee packaging which says ‘100% arabica.

coffee beans’ because these beans are rarely ever blended with other ones. The low quality of the robusta beans might make them a less expensive option to produce and buy which is why it’s used to make coffee blends to reduce cost as well.

Robusta coffee beans tend to be easier to grow than arabica coffee beans and are also less susceptible to getting affected by pests and tricky weather conditions when compared to arabica coffee beans.

Robusta beans are a preferred choice when making espresso coffee, which makes the coffee stronger and caffeine filled. Whereas you’ll find arabica coffee beans in instant coffee and ground coffee.
